So I’m shopping for a new 27-inch monitor with flicker-free and low blue light as a new monitor with PWM I just bought is giving me sore veiny eyes, headaches and sleepless nights.Indended use: gaming, CAD (dark backround; hence VA), movies, some video and photo editing.What I want from a monitor: nice deep blacks, as little ghosting as possible. I don’t like IPS monitors becuase of backlight bleed which I hate with a passion.My question is, is it worth paying extra for the BenQ GW2760HS over the BenQ GW2760HM? Aren’t you just paying premium for a thinner bezel? Both are VA panels, perhaps it’s even the same one.I’m very confused about the BenQ GW2760HM because there are conflicting reviews about it.For example, the GW2760HM even beat the GW2760HS in this Korean reviews:But then there’s then there’s this video claiming the exact opposite:So have revisions brought the HM on par with the HS in Europe?

Does it have flicker-free and low blue light?Then there’s the BenQ GL2760H with a TN panel, thus faster pixel response time. How are the blacks on this thing?

I feel you’d gain a much better experience from a decent VA model instead. The GW2760HM has undergone several revisional changes and I believe does now feature the same panel as the. It doesn’t feature ‘Low Blue Light’ settings but has a ‘Reading’ mode which has the same utility.

It does feature a flicker-free backlight as noted in our news article.If you aren’t particularly bothered about the slender bezels and ‘Low Blue Light’ settings (remember – you do get that ‘reading’ mode anyway) then it might indeed make sense to simply opt for the GW2760HM. I’d also recommend considering the with a new and improved panel, it is a bit more impressive in terms of colour reproduction but may come at a premium for you that would be hard to accept. Is the EW2750ZL significantly better? It’s priced close to the BL2700HT which has very positive user reviews and it’s the only one with an AMVA panel whereas the others are just VA.Me and my wallet would be happiest if I ended up with the GW2760HM provided it isn’t a step down from what I have now.

I’m way over the original budget for my whole PC as it is.Now about the monitor I purchased, Philips 273V5QHA. Philips claims it’s flicker free:I tested this with my phone camera and there are moving horizontal lines unless the brightness is set to 100, so it’s false.I like everything else about it. The response times are OK, I feel no input lag and the colours are good out of the box. The ‘Reading’ mode does not affect pixel responsiveness or input lag in any way, it simply reduces colour temperature. It is no different to what ‘Low Blue Light’ settings do, except there is only one of them.Philips have a habbit of putting ‘flicker free’ on monitors that actually aren’t (and vice-versa). I recently reviewed this (‘IPS’ not VA) from them that was advertised as ‘flicker-free’ and discovered it actually uses 240Hz PWM. I’m going to report this to Philips as well because it’s quite annoying to have users suffer from false marketing. With the 273V5QHA, though, they say “It produces brilliant flicker-free progressive scan pictures with superb brightness and colours.” But they don’t market it as ‘flicker-free’ in the same way they do their monitors intended to actually be flicker-free. That’s just old spiel copy and pasted from various much older models and the flicker there is just referring to it being LCD rather than a low refresh rate CRT. The EW2750ZL review in particular covers in detail our observations related to ‘black crush’, so I’d recommend referring to that again. It is specifically noted on the EW2750ZL review that we felt the issue was minor – and its implications are explored in some depth. We reviewed the GW2760HS and EW2750ZL some time apart, but given what I feel are slightly superior viewing angles on the newer panel the black crush is perhaps slightly reduced on this one. You can also counteract this further by using a lower central gamma (i.e.

Lower gamma mode) if that’s something you are specifically wanting to avoid. This also affects the saturation and overall depth of other shades, but you get good flexibility on the BenQ models as far as gamma settings go.I can’t comment on the other models you’ve listed there as I have no experience with them.

We will however be reviewing one of the shortly. I’m not sure which one yet, but if it’s the 27″ model it will use a similar panel to the S27E510C so would give a good indicator of that.

I’ve had the BenQ EW2750ZL for a week now. Let me describe my experience with it. Static images and working in Windows has never been more pleasant, but when it comes to gamingI’m disappointed.I don’t play competitive shooters, in fact, I mostly play older games. Even little motion causes apparent loss of detail, but when things move fast, it’s just blur and ghosting all over the place.

I don’t actually think that this is a bad monitor for Counter-Strike players as the input lag is very low and blurry textures aren’t going to make headshots more difficult.It bothers me a lot that I have to stop in order to admire a scenery or a nice texture or whatever. I prefer to be able to see all the details on the move.

The darker the scene / colours, the worse it gets which doesn’t favor my favourite genres of games (e.g. Space sims).I just played this space game called Freelancer where I arrived in one system via a wormhole. I looked behind me and the backround space was pitch black there (at other places, the game is very colourful with nebulas and other space objects). At a long distance there was this very wide asteroid field ranging from one side of the screen to the other.

Each asteroid was only displayed as one pixel – they all appeared as tiny dust particles (4K would be handy here btw).This resulted in thousands of grey pixels on a black backround and this is where a weird phenomenom occured. As soon as I started moving the camera, even slightly, (like 1 deg/s) all the individual asteroids / pixels outside of the main cluster went completely dark – almost disappeared. When I stopped turning the camera, it took them nearly a full second to recover!!! GTG response time at its finest.I quickly swapped to my old TN to check if it suffers from thisalmost a bug. It doesn’t.I’m not very happy with this monitor.

I’d like to give the ASUS VP278H Gaming a try, but I’m worried about colour distortion and TN gradient / backlight glow. Those aren’t a problem on my old 20 inch 4:3 TN monitor, but 27 inch 16:9 is a different story.What do you think I should do? Well that’s a shame! Those lovely slower high contrast transitions that VA models perform very sluggish are coming into play there.

Unfortunately you’re going to have to make a compromise and pick your poison. Which of these do you find most tolerable:1) IPS glow and reasonable possibility of backlight bleed2) Sluggish pixel responses on VA models (may get better if considering much more expensive/larger models only – and even then there are some weaknesses)3) Inconsistent gamma and possibility of backlight uniformity issues like bleed and clouding on TNAside from the viewing angle related inconsistencies, the only thing that isn’t guaranteed is having problematic backlight bleed on the TN models.

Slower pixel responses for VA models and IPS glow are guaranteed with the models you’ll be considering. I’ll see what I can do. Provided I can return this one (btw.

First, sorry for the quality, I couldn’t find my camera.You won’t be able to see individual grey pixels in the middle, representing an asteroid belt at a distance, disappearing, but I flew into another illuminated asteroid field with tiny rocks and glowing particles which, when in motion, alongside the stars in the backround, expose the same issue.I then turned around to show this problem doesn’t occur when the scene is predominantly bright. With very light grey to black transitions, VA models almost invariably have a sort of ‘bleeding’ effect which I describe in the EW2750ZL review. It usually creates other colours such as a dark green or red-tinted grey or black, but could well cause very small objects like this to essentially blend into the background as is shown in your video. Much as I’d love to see the offer improvements in that area, I wouldn’t get your hopes up as I’ve yet to see any VA model that doesn’t suffer from this to some degree.I also wonder if the resolution and interpolation could be affecting what you see here. If I’m not mistaken that game is limited to the 1280 x 960 resolution.

I’m not really sure how well the EW2750ZL would handle such a resolution – is the TN model you’re using running at its native resolution by any chance? Do IPS panels tend to suffer from this “backround blending” too?Anyway, I don’t want to create an impression that the EW2750ZL is a bad monitor here. Your review is accurate. As far as gaming goes, in bright colourful games like Crysis or Far Cry, ghosting / blurring is negligible (I was pissed before and exaggerated), but it really does get significantly worse with darker shades.It’s like every panel technology is putting an obstacle in the way of immersive “dark” gaming. On top of what you listed previously, gaming TN’s have this ridiculous habbit of illuminating areas that are supposed to be dark.As for the resolution, many old PC games can be set to full HD by messing around in.cfg files or using downloadable fixes and Freelancer is no exception. I was running the which still receives regular updates so FHD is a matter of course.In regards to your reply to my thread on overclock.net, I appreciate you took your time to download the trial version of the game in order to test it yourself. Download re-loader 1.4 rc 3. However, if you wish to recreate the setting, you need:1. Full version of the game (it’s abandonware now)2.3. To be able to navigate through unexplored territories quickly. The source feed for FC must be set to the Discovery Freelancer fodder, not Freelancer (base installation).Like I said before, the backround image of space in Freelancer is predominantly colourful and in order to recreate you will need to find a system / sector that’s pitch black (at least a side of it) and has preferable some small bright 3D objects in it, although stars could do as well.

Stars, asteroids and glowy particles will not blend when the backround is of other colours than black.I was in the Omicron-80 system, between the Tau-37 and Omicron Alpha jump hole. I’m pretty sure there are other systems with pitch dark backround images and closer to the starter systems, but I don’t have time to look for them right now.Getting to Omicron-80 in Discovery Freelancer can take up to 30 minutes, but can be sped up by using Freelancer Companion which will find the shortest route and display it on the grid.You can do this in singleplayer or multiplayer. Singleplayer in DF has no story mod, it’s a sandbox.

In multiplayer, it is against server rules (Discovery RP24/7) to attack low-level players in base ships, plus the server decreases NPC traffic depending on the number of players so getting there should relatively safe unless you crash into something. I recommend docking with a station on your way there in order not to lose your progress in the event of an accident. In multiplayer, you’ll respawn automatically where you last docked, in singleplayer, you have to save manually.You’ll start in the New York or Pennsylvania system.1.

Alt+tab and launch Freelancer Companion.2. Set your current system to New York or Pennsylvania.3. Set your destination to Omicron-80 and follow the directions.4. Switch between the game and the FC every time you arrive in a new system in order to learn when the yet-to-be-discovered jumpgate or jumpholes leading to Omicron-80 are.5. You can use the in-game map to set waypoints, activate autopilot (F2) to travel towards them and alt+tab to windows to do something else.

Just keep in mind that some NPC’s are hostile even in the beginning. IPS panels don’t tend to suffer from this.

Certainly not from the same extent, at least. They can sometimes have slower pixel transitions between very light and very dark shades (other than ‘black’) but the speed of even these transitions is generally significantly faster than on a VA panel and wouldn’t generally cause the stars to disappear in this example.The gamma shift on TN behaviour does tend to make darker areas appear ‘wrong’ as shades become lighter further down the screen in particular.

That includes any dark shades lighter than pure black. So there really is no winning! But I will try to recreate this scene on the S27E650C when I have time.
